What's Your State of Mind?
What gift will you create for the people and the places that mean the most to you?
NYC Next is an organisation on a mission to support and rebuild New York City.
Their goal is simple: “To help the city we love to recover and rebuild, and to energize and inspire others to act by creating moments of joy.”
To bring awareness to the campaign, they enlisted a bunch of some of the most creative people in the city to film “New York State of Mind” as a rallying cry to inspire and motivate New Yorkers to civic action. To give themselves to the people and city they care about.
The song and video feature many familiar artists from the stage, screen and music industry. Billy’s longtime saxophonist Mark Rivera and keyboardist David Rosenthal are joined by Broadway luminaries, TV personalities and other great performers.
As I watched the video I was waiting to see when Billy Joel himself would appear. Then at the 3/4 mark, I realised he’d been there all along. You don’t have “New York State of Mind” without Billy Joel - and anybody who would recognise him in the video knows it.
Billy Joel has ‘gifted’ this song to the city. What started as an idea in his head and flowed through his fingers, is now in the DNA of the city and everyone in it.
It’s as much an icon of the city as Milton Glaser’s I ❤️ NYC and Lady Liberty herself. Each of these creations, that represent New York at home and around the world, began as an idea in the mind of an artist not unlike yourself.
What gift will you create for the people and the places that mean the most to you?
The Infinite Creative wouldn’t exist in a world without coffee. A simple but generous way for you to show your support is to buy me a coffee. Every sip will be put towards helping artists and creatives build sustainable careers and tell powerful stories that matter. ❤️
