The secret to catching the wave
Netflix announced that millions of subscribers (members) have just discovered Ava Duvernay’s film about race and justice, 13th.
The documentary, which was released in October 2016 had a 4665% increase in streams these past 3 weeks over the 3 weeks prior.
Duvernay created 13th to turn the viewer from someone who doesn’t understand how pervasive systemic racism is in contemporary America, into someone who does.
In her words:
After you see 13th, silence in this case is consent. You can’t just […] put down your iPad after you see it […] and do nothing about it.
She knew that it was the right time to release the film in 2016. I’m sure she couldn’t have forseen the massive widespread interest that would surge 4 years later.
2016 was the right time for her to release it. 2020 was the right time for millions of new viewers to watch it.
